Common Router Problems and Quick Fixes
The most common router problems, and the quick fixes for each
Most router issues fall into a handful of repeatable categories. Here's a quick diagnostic guide before you assume you need new equipment.
Problem: WiFi drops intermittently
Often caused by overheating or interference. Make sure your router has open space around it, isn't stacked on warm electronics, and isn't in direct sunlight.
Problem: Some rooms have no signal at all
This is a coverage problem. Consider a mesh WiFi system or a wired access point rather than repeatedly repositioning the router.
Problem: Devices connect but pages won't load
Usually a DNS or modem-side issue. Restart the modem and router in the correct order, and try switching to a public DNS provider.
Problem: Router settings page won't load
Most routers reset their admin login if held on a physical reset button for 10+ seconds, which also wipes your WiFi name and password.
Problem: One device keeps disconnecting
Often device-specific. Check for outdated network drivers or try forgetting and reconnecting to the network on that device.
When to replace the router
If your router is more than 5-6 years old, it likely doesn't support newer WiFi standards. An upgraded router or mesh system is usually the next step.
