Fixed vs. variable energy rates: which is actually better for you

One of the first decisions when choosing an energy retailer is whether to go with a fixed or variable rate plan. Neither is universally better.

How fixed rate plans work

A fixed rate locks in your price per unit for your contract term regardless of market moves. Best for people who value predictability and want to avoid price spikes.

How variable rate plans work

A variable rate moves with the market. Best for people comfortable with fluctuation in exchange for potential savings when prices are low.

The tradeoff in plain terms

Fixed rates trade potential savings during low-price periods for protection against high-price periods. Variable rates offer the reverse.

Questions to ask before choosing

How long is the contract, is there a cancellation fee, and has this retailer's variable rate historically tracked the regulated rate closely?

A reasonable default approach

If you want predictable budgeting, a fixed rate removes a variable. If you're willing to monitor and switch when needed, a variable rate can work in your favor over time.
