How to Choose the Right Internet Speed for Your Household

Don't pay for more speed than your household actually uses

Internet providers often push their fastest available tier, but most households don't need the top plan. Here's a more practical way to size your plan to your actual usage.

Start with your device count and habits

1-2 people mostly browsing and streaming: 50-100 Mbps is typically enough. 3-4 people with regular streaming and remote work: 150-300 Mbps is comfortable. Larger households with 4K streaming on multiple TVs: 300-500+ Mbps helps avoid contention.

Upload speed matters more than people think

Video calls, cloud backups, and uploading photos all depend on upload speed, not download speed. Fiber plans often outperform cable plans on this even at similar download speeds.

Account for simultaneous usage

Add up realistic simultaneous demand across your household rather than sizing for a single use case.

Test before you upgrade

Run a wired speed test before assuming you need a bigger plan. Often the bottleneck is router placement rather than the plan itself.

When to actually upgrade

Upgrade if wired speed tests consistently come in near your plan's advertised speed but that still isn't enough for your household's simultaneous usage. BigWiFi's team can help match a plan to your actual usage.
