How to switch energy providers without any interruption to your service

A common misconception about switching energy retailers is that it risks losing power or gas service during the switch. It doesn't.

Your physical service never changes

Switching retailers only changes who bills you for the energy itself. The physical delivery stays with your local utility the entire time. There is no meter swap or service interruption.

What the switching process actually looks like

You choose a new retailer and sign up. The new retailer coordinates the switch with your utility in the background. Your utility updates its records, and your next bill reflects the new plan.

Timing considerations

If you're under a fixed-term contract, check for early cancellation fees before switching. On a month-to-month or variable rate, there's typically no penalty.

What to have ready

A recent bill with your account details, your current contract end date, and a clear idea of fixed vs. variable preference.

After you've switched

Confirm your first bill or two match what you signed up for, and set a reminder for when any fixed-term contract approaches its end date.
